George Town, Penang, Malaysia

George Town, on the island district of Penang, Malaysia, is a unique destination on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Once a trading post for the British East India company, it now has a melting pot of influences - Malaysian, Chinese, Indian, and European. As a result, it's a colorful, diverse community with exceptional street food. More recently, the town's street art has also become famous.

George Town is an ideal place to make your first visit to Southeast Asia. English is widely spoken, getting around is easy and affordable, there are plenty of things to do for every interest, it's safe and welcoming for foreigners, and boasts excellent health care.

Top things to do in George Town, Penang include: tasting the unique street food dishes from hawker stalls and night markets, hunting for murals throughout the town, hiking up nearby Penang Hill or Penang National Park, and visiting historical sites like Fort Cornwallis.

Why We Went

George Town was recommended to us by some fellow digital nomads - people whose work is done online and not tied to one location. Because of the improving amenities, housing, and internet, Penang is becoming more and more attractive to expats lately, so many believe that it will soon become a popular hub for digital nomads.

We stayed in an Airbnb for 11 days, and we really enjoyed it. One of the highlights of our trip was actually getting some affordable health care done. We got full health checks, including 66 blood tests, ultrasound, x-ray, EKG, and even breakfast, with results delivered the same day, for $112 US! Our dental cleanings were about $30 US and some of the best service we’ve ever received. We would come back to George Town just for the health care alone.
